Looking into the different programs I'm initially attracted to SL 5x5 routine for the following reasons:įocus on functional strength and compound lifts.I do a lot of things that would tie into the movements trained during these exercises. A lot of my training partners are college wrestlers who are freakishly strong, and its been a good wake up call that while my cardiovascular fitness is decent my strength could use some major strides. I've noticed that since I stopped lifting seriously 2 years ago I've managed to keep a decent amount of fat off, but a lot of the little functional strength I had has deteriorated. I wouldn't describe myself as a fighter, at least not yet, but the majority of my training partners are pros and or have amateur records and I hold myself to the same standard that they do. Since ending my swimming career I've taken on a new athletic pursuit and started training MMA fairly seriously 5-6 times a week. Ex collegiate swimmer so no stranger to compound lifts and managing a lifting schedule with 6 day a week cardio. Some background on me: 6'7 225 pound 22 years old athletic build but obviously not super built by any means.
I've been reading this sub for a while and have been researching some of the programs that people are using regularly as I'm looking to get back into lifting seriously after a long layoff. Hi r/Fitness first time poster in this sub here.
